In recent years increased theft of copper gained attention nationally. From taking wiring from electrical power stations to robbing middle-class homes, miles and miles of copper were stolen, making it a $1 billion issue. The reason copper became the go-to metal of thieves is that it was easily available and prices for scrap copper remain relatively high, almost $3 a pound, due to a high demand for the metal for wiring and plumbing, as well as new energy systems and the rechargeable-battery revolution. Each state has established scrap metal laws and procedures that sellers are required to adhere to when bringing in copper. At Roane Metals, we buy and recycle copper scrap metal, and as long as everything checks out, the seller will be in and out in less than 45 minutes. However, not everyone can bring copper into us and receive a check immediately.
How Do I Get Paid?
Scrap Laws in Tennessee require the following information to be taken to receive payment at the time of scrapping: driver’s license, fingerprinting onsite, and a description and copy of the license plate of seller’s vehicle. These items are kept on file with the scrap yard for three years. When the scrap dealer comes to the site, payment will not be received at the time of dropping off the scrap copper, unless they show proof of being a registered Class 4 business or a scrap dealer’s license. Otherwise, the scrap yard is required by law to mail the check to the place of business. If the person selling to the scrap yard is not a registered business or is selling as an agent or employee of a business, the check or payment voucher will be sent to their address listed on the driver’s license within five business days.
The Black and White of Scrap Metal Laws on Copper in Tennessee
Section 62-9 of the Tennessee Code Annotated deals directly with scrap metals. This code lists specifics regarding who can sell, who can buy, and requirements of the process. Outlined in these sections are statements that include that any applicant who has been convicted of violations of these chapters, or conviction for the theft, burglary, or vandalism involving scrap metals will be prohibited to register for selling scrap for five years from the date of conviction.
